Plymouth rock was much larger when the pilgrims came to America. Over time, wind erosion and water erosion have eaten into the rock, turning it to sand. (not to mention the thousands of people breaking off peices of it for a souvenier) Plymouth rock would still be eroding today if it was not in an enclosure to keep it safe.
